Hi, my name is Ximena. And in today’s Shark Bite I will talk about the best way to find negative keywords so you avoid paying for irrelevant traffic and clicks.

Pay Attention to Your Search Terms Report

The first place to look for negative keywords is in your Search Terms Report. Find keywords that your visitors have typed to find your ad and exclude anything that’s irrelevant. Remember to not just exclude the single-use case of that keyword. So for example, if you’re adding the keyword “dentist jobs,” then make sure you add the negative keyword “job” and “jobs” so that you exclude all instances of that search.

Find Alternative Keyword Meanings

The second way to find negative keywords is to type in your keyword into Google or Ubersuggest to find all alternate meanings of that same keyword. So for instance, if you have the word “plumber,” then by typing in your keyword there, you could find other instances such as “plumber jokes” or “plumber supplies.” So basically, you’re trying to exclude any other definition or association of that keyword so that you just go from there.

Exclude Irrelevant Geographical Areas

My third tip has to do with adding geographical areas like cities, countries, zip codes, or anywhere that your business is not present in. I don’t know if it has to do with the fact that we live in a globalized world, but a lot of times I see searches coming from countries or areas where the business is not present. So simply add them all so that you avoid any irrelevant search that comes from a different geographical area.

Visit Industry Communities

The fourth way of finding your negative keywords is that you visit communities that are from your industry or niche. So join Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, Google+ communities. The way it works is that you can learn about your industry while also finding new services that you don’t offer or terms you’ve never heard of that you can add to your negative keyword list.

Go Back to Basics

My last way to find negative keywords is perhaps the most obvious one. So look into the keyword planner to find other keyword variations and even added data like search volume or estimated cost per click.
